Travels with My Ex by Susan Straight

The Essay Travels With My Ex by Susan Straight, was written for the purpose of making all readers aware of the racism still going on today through a personal experience as a black woman. She has written seven novels, one of which is about slavery which was at a time when slavery was at it's height.   Straight's family was on vacation when they first experienced racism. Straight's family included her ex-husband and three daughters, two of who were at college on scholarships. The essay outlines the struggle and fear as a black family amongst themselves, and with the police. Logos and pathos are implemented to reveal racism occurring and it's modern-day relevance. Straight describes a situation in which people made assumptions about her ex-husband as a result of his physical build and his color.  On this occasion, after the police pulled over their children because of their race, Straight and her ex-husband pulled over in an attempt to assist.  The police were in search of a tall black man had committed a crime in UCLA recently, a location close to where the family was driving. She describes that, “he’s the 6’4 black guy, the one that fits the description.” (Straight, 202) Although he hasn't necessarily done anything wrong, the police make it clear that it does not matter. The author shows us the logic in police's thinking, which showed pure racism.  Simply because the husband fits the general description of a criminal, the police showed no mercy. Pathos was also used in the essay. After getting pulled over unjustly by the police, the children are asked, “Where’s your car? Is it stolen? Why are you here?” The rapid fire of the questions causes the reader to feel a sense of urgency and desperation. Similarly, the family fears for their lives as the cops automatically assume that the car was stolen purely based on the color of the Straight's skin. The reader is lead to  feel and empathize with the family’s reaction to the racism, as Straight succeeds in revealing the existence and severity of modern racism.

  1. Sorry but this is completely out of context to what the essay is about. For instance, it describes that the she is indeed a white female in the paragraph where she expresses how it is "Her Job" to represent her mixed race daughters as a white mother. Secondly, When "The Scholar" got pulled over it was due to the fact that "The Baller's" Boyfriend "Our Laure" depicted the identifications of the UCLA Offender. Not the Ex Husband. Also, You forgot to mention the Daughters team mates "Neka" and "Bink" that where joining on the journey to Huntington Beach. Please revise the litterateur thoroughly before you post any false conclusions on the web that others might use as false reference. Thank You! Sincerely, College Student.
